Poetry Friday: “Cross that Line” by Naomi Shihab Nye

Thanks to Space City Scribes for hosting today’s Poetry Friday. lines in the sand

I’ve been watching the news from Baltimore and grieving.  There is so much pain, so much injustice…so many lines that so many people seem unable and unwilling to cross.  This Poetry Friday, I turn to the wisdom of poetry…and hope…

Cross that Line, Naomi Shihab Nye

Paul Robeson stood
on the northern border
of the USA
and sang into Canada
where a vast audience
sat on folding chairs
waiting to hear him.

He sang into Canada.
His voice left the USA
when his body was
not allowed to cross
that line.

Remind us again,
brave friend.
What countries may we
sing into?
What lines should we all
be crossing?
What songs travel toward us
from far away
to deepen our days?

  1. What words will break this cycle of violence we seem to be trapped in? Thank you for sharing this, Tara. Let’s hope the decision to hold the officers accountable will have an impact on the behavior of others.
